Who Wore It Best At The Knight And DayPremiere?

Tom Cruise is staging a comeback—again—with Knight and Day, his new action/comedy flick. The jury’s out on that one, but at the film’s Seville premiere, we did find ourselves more interested in his arm candy than in the Top Gun himself. Co-star Cameron Diaz played the leading role on screen and on the red carpet: She was all drama in a Lanvin dress (calculated, no doubt, to show off her fabulously toned legs) with Lanvin pumps, a Fallon cuff, and blazing red lips. Tom’s real-life paramour, Katie Holmes, on the other hand, went for a sweeter look: a pleated Alaïa dress, gladiator sandals, and barely-there makeup. One went diva, one went demure—who wore it best? Do you prefer Cameron’s marquee glitz, or are you feeling Katie’s quiet elegance?

Shareen Vintage Pops Up At Madewell

“My husband doesn’t even really know what my day is like. I’m in the trenches,” Shareen Mitchell said in front of a camera crew for her new reality series at Madewell in Los Angeles last night. To L.A. and NYC vintage shoppers in the know, Mitchell needs no introduction. The actress and former designer, typically referred to simply by her first name—the namesake of her perpetually packed bicoastal vintage boutiques—has a cult following that’s been steadily building for years. “I’m not really about vintage; I’m not about the past. I want to be about bringing fashion to you at a price you can afford,” she said. Over her shoulder, shoppers were swarming three racks of vintage pieces (some reworked) handpicked by Shareen, which will be selling at in-store pop-up shops at Madewell’s Century City and Soho stores for under $100 as long as supplies last.

Where does she find the goods? “That’s always the question,” Mitchell says. “I work with independent buyers who source things and bring them for me to buy. But I also do a lot of digging. It’s kind of an excavating process for me in places that sort used clothing. It’s not easy. It’s dirty work.” It’s this less glamorous side of her profession that will be prominently featured in a new reality TV series, Shareen Vintage, which premieres on Planet Green this fall.

As for Shareen’s styles up for grabs at Madewell: Think loose-fitting and backless dresses in Indian prints and fifties party dresses (minus their linings). “I’m seeing fashion move to a very conservative trend. There’s a need for glamour, charm, lovely…I love the word lovely,” Mitchell says of the shift she’s noticing away from the strong, structured eighties silhouettes. As we’ve seen elsewhere, it’s bye-bye eighties, hello seventies—come fall, Mitchell will be serving up plenty of Me Decade styles, of which Phoebe Philo would likely approve. “I have so much of it I couldn’t sell the last four years because no one wanted it,” she says. My, how times have changed.

What’s Tennis Got To Do With It?

Venus Williams incited a minor international debate with her slightly bordello-ish lace outfit at the French Open a few weeks back. But if you thought that was…well, whatever you thought that was, the unfazed fashion plate promises you ain’t seen nothing yet. “I know that the French Open outfit look caused a stir, but I think the one I will wear in the next couple days will be better yet—it’s all about lace and fringes, a lot of fringes. I’m thinking about Tina Turner here. I am not sure how that is going to go over, but at least I can say that it will catch everyone’s attention.”

For the moment, though, Williams was clad in Ralph Lauren, at RL’s New Bond Street London shop for his annual pre-Wimbledon party. (As the man is preparing to sell a tiny percentage of his company for quite near $1 billion, there was, needless to say, much Champagne flowing.)

Well, if anyone can avert eyes from World Cup mania, it’s Venus—she certainly held her own among Gwyneth Paltrow, her bestie/stylist Elizabeth Saltzman Walker, Matt LeBlanc,Love’s Katie Grand, and of course, Lilly and Boris Becker (pictured above with Williams). But Grand, usually thought of more as LV than RL, only had eyes for shopping. “I was one of the first people here tonight, and I have already ID’ed this chair with the RL crest pillow as the next on my most wanted list,” she said, tucking her feet up into a rattan Montauk-esque jobby. And to go with it? “The navy jacket with the white piping—must, must have it. I am working on it.” Come to think of it, modify it for the court and it might be a good look for Venus, too.

Stella’s Expecting, Michael Kors Is Winning, Christophe Lemaire Is Showing, And More…

It’s a hat trick for Michael Kors: After being honored by the CFDA (with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award) and the Fragrance Foundation (with induction to the Fragrance Hall of Fame), Kors scored his third nod, from the Cancer Research Institute for his work raising awareness about and funds for breast cancer. [WWD]

Stella McCartney is expecting! The designer revealed yesterday she’s pregnant with her fourth sure-to-be-adorable child with husband Alasdhair Wills. Congrats to the happy couple (and to all those moms thrilled for what another kid might mean for the extension of Stella’s GapKids line). [Vogue U.K.]

Christophe Lemaire, while creative-directing Lacoste and preparing to take the reins at Hermès womenswear, has somehow found time to show his own collection off-schedule at Couture week. It marks his first runway showing since 2003. [WWD]

Disney’s Toy Story 3 comes out tomorrow, and to celebrate (and merchandise, of course) the event, Disney has tapped designers to create special tees based on the characters. Victor Glemaud took on cowboy Woody, Cassette Playa did astronaut Buzz, and Costello Tagliapietra, Hamm the pig. They’re all available now at Revolve Clothing. [Fashionista]

Beyoncé is reportedly retiring the “Single Ladies” dance. “Single Ladies” dance, we hardly knew ye! Actually, that’s not true—we knew ye pretty well. New York magazine took a moment to remember the highs and lows of the dance craze, and its finest practitioners (from Justin Timberlake to Liza Minnelli). [NY Mag]

Fit To Be Tied

It seems like all of a sudden, summer’s here—the official start date (June 21, if you’re counting) is a few days off, but the temperatures are up, the days are long, and, barometer of barometers, Club Monaco is once again hosting its on-site beach boutiques at select locations. The retailers warm-weather collections are all on offer, of course, but we’re just as excited for the addition of some a few new lines, too. Bikinis from Paula Hermanny’s ViX swimwear line, in particular, are sexy staples direct from Brazil—a country that knows a thing or two about looking good on the beach. In the throes of World Cup fever, it’s a good reminder that Kaka isn’t its only fine-looking export.

Your PS1, Super-Sized

Pre-collections offer designers the opportunity to experiment and test out new ideas, but they’re also a good time to riff on the best sellers—the Resort collection spends a long time on the sales floor, after all. Celine did just that with a few new versions of its Classic bag, which we checked out earlier this week; now Jack and Lazaro of Proenza Schouler are doing the same with a bigger-is-better twist on the PS1. The new weekender model comes in two sizes, a medium and a large (they’ll retail for $1,150 and $1,350, respectively, when they go on sale in December), that look every bit as cool as their predecessors. Why reinvent the wheel? I smell another success.

The Puppy Knuckle-Duster You Didn’t Know You Wanted

Puppies. Knuckle-dusters. Strange bedfellows, you might say. But it’s just par for the course from Vera Balyura’s jewelry line, VeraMeat, which offers vampire fangs cast in silver, gold, or copper and Zombie Queen and dinosaur-eating-fried-chicken pendants, too. There’s a cinematic aura surrounding the whole collection—a B movie bent, really—so no surprise that it’s picked up film-world fans such as Tilda Swinton, Michel Gondry, Miranda July, and Zach Galifianakis. And no surprise, much of Balyura’s inspiration comes from hanging out on movie sets when she was young. “It really shaped the way I see the world,” she explains. “I have a sort of anything-is-possible mentality. It’s like, anAlien vs. Predator pendant? Why not?” The idea for the puppy duster, meanwhile, is firmly rooted in Balyura’s current East Village reality: She just got a dog. “Her name is Fred. She’s super cute. And you know what’s cuter than one puppy?” Balyura asks. “Lots of puppies all stuck together.”
