U.K. transport minister says BA strike unjustified

The union for British Airways cabin crew announced last week seven days of strikes later this month over a pay freeze and changes to working conditions.
LONDON (AP) — Britain's transportation secretary says the planned strike by BA staff is unjustified and threatens the future of one of the country's major companies.

Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis told the BBC on Sunday that the strike "will ... threaten the very existence of British Airways."

Calling the industrial action "totally unjustified," Adonis said that, aside from the inconvenience to passengers, the planned strike also threatens "the future of one of our great companies in this country."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has called for both sides to return to the negotiating table.
