The Telegraph World Cup app, which is available for free from Apple's iTunes store, has been downloaded more than 143,000 times in the last week, and is the third most popular free sports app for the iPhone and iPod touch.

It's designed to keep football fans up to date with all the latest news from theFifa World Cup in South Africa, with expert analysis from Michael Owen, Adrian Chiles, Alan Hansen and Ossie Ardiles, and the Telegraph's own reporting team.

Users can choose up to three favourite teams to track in detail throughout the tournament, and the app will automatically alert users whenever there is breaking news about their chosen sides or groups. The app also integrates Twitter updates from the Telegraph's key reporters and columnists, including Henry Winter, Alan Smith and Jim White.

The app doubles as an interactive "wall chart", allowing users to keep track of fixtures and results throughout the group stages and beyond. It even uses the iPhone's built-in location tools to display kick-off times in local time, regardless of what country the user is in.

And for the knockout stages, the app will feature an interactive voting section where fans can cast their votes about who should win the match. The results will be plotted on an interactive "global consciousness" map that can be explored in more
