Surgery goes stateside!

Behind the glitz of New York’s most glamorous ladies lies a surgery scene where no treatment is too extreme...

"For New York women, vanity isn't something to be shy about, it's essential," says US surgeon Dr Philip Miller. "Everyone wants to look young and thin." Well, hello, us too! But a bit of frown-filler is only the start of the surgery story. With new treatments varying from extreme to downright X-rated, here's a glimpse of our faking-it future

The nipple job

Cost $600

Samantha was on to something when she invested in a pair of fake nipples. Across NYC, women are having theirs trimmed and tweaked. "Two years ago I saw five women a month, now I'm seeing five a week," reveals nipple surgeon Dr Grant Stevens. The latest trend is going perkier - injecting the filler Radiesse into nipples - or neater, where surgeons remove a section of the areola and stretch out what's left to make your nipple look smaller.

Over here, corrective nipple surgery is offered in mastectomies, but having nipple tucks to look more perky is a US-thing for now. The UK-based Harley Medical Group has recently reported a rise in requests for nipple surgery, especially to correct inverted nipples. But if you don't fancy a needle near your best assets, get yourself some Sam-style falsies, £6.99 from Bosomfriends.co.uk.

The can't-feel-your-heels filler

Cost $750

Carrie minus Manolos? Erm, flat chance! Unlike us, NYC's heel elite have more than a pair of Party Feet gel cushions to save their soles. They're getting surgeons at TriBeCa MedSpa to inject fillers Restylane or Juvéderm into the balls of their feet to provide cushions for their Choos.

"This treatment means you never have to sacrifice style for comfort," says spa founder Dr Gerald Ginsberg. Well, almost. Although fillers provide padding for the foot's nerves, they don't take away pain completely - and you have to get a top-up every six months. While you can get the foot-fix at some UK clinics, we'll stick to this season's sexy mid-heels instead.

The thigh-to-face fat jab

Cost $3,000

It's one thing having fat sucked out - but having it put back in again? Eww! Across NY, women are queueing up for the new Pure Graft - a new method of moving stomach or thigh fat to your face. How? Well, we hope you're not eating Your lumpy thigh-fat cells get sucked out, treated to go all runny, then injected into your face to fill out wrinkles and plump cheeks.

"The idea of transferring fat isn't new," says Wendy Lewis, author of Plastic Makes Perfect (Orion, £16.99). "But with Pure Graft, fat can be moved from thighs to face in 15 minutes - meaning what was once a week-long procedure can now be done in your lunch hour." As word spreads across the pond, expect lunchtime lipo to start appearing here soon.

The collagen cooker

Cost $4,000

Prevention before cure is taken to a whole new level in NY where women as young as 21 - yes, that's 21 - are having Botox!

The hottest anti-ageing weapon - literally - is currently Thermage CPT (comfort pulse technology). Thermage itself isn't new - it involves moving a handheld device over your face as it emits hot energy waves that 'cook' and tighten collagen fibres. But the new CPT version, which has only been around for a few months, has a more precise applicator - making it less hot, less painful and more effective.

But the best thing about Thermage - and the reason why New Yorkers love it - is the fact it can zap wrinkles before and after they appear so you're never too young, or old, to let it do its magic. Because it's a collagen stimulator, Thermage can prevent wrinkles by keeping skin plump, or it can improve the look of existing wrinkles and keep future ones at bay.

You'll see firmer skin after just one session, although therapists recommend having three spaced over a few weeks, plus yearly top-ups to get the most benefit. The treatment is currently making its way into some UK clinics (visit Thermage.com), but be warned - it won't be cheap!

The clitoris nip/tuck

Cost $6,000

It's hard to believe someone would let a knife anywhere near their lady garden (we're crossing our legs at the thought!). But stateside, clitoropexy - plastic surgery for you know what - is all the rage.

Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon Dr Gary Alter researched the idea two years ago and has been perfecting the technique ever since. He says: "If you have a large, protruding clitoris that shows through a bikini, this operation reduces the size of the hood and repositions the clitoris so it's more tucked in and discreet."

And there's gotta be a bedroom ahhh-dvantage? "As skin and tissue are removed, the sensitive part is exposed, increasing sexual pleasure," says Dr Alter. With vaginal surgery becoming more popular here - mainly labia reductions and tightening - it's only a matter of time before UK surgeons venture to our pleasure parts. Yikes!

Emotional botox

Cost $400

Forget Botox to look younger (so UK, dahling!) - in NY it's used to make people happier. During the Smile Lift, tiny amounts of Botox or filler are injected into the corners of the mouth to counteract the droop that happens as you age.

"Emotional Botox is big news," says Dr Vicky Dondos, founder of new London clinic Medicetics. "Women have Botox to look less worried - now they're also having it to look happier."

Dr Dondos is starting to offer the treatment to UK patients. Prices start from £200 a pop and the effects last for up to six months.

Spa bizarre

We reveal the world's wackiest spa treatments...

Feeling stre-ssss-ed? For $70 (£46), a therapist at Ada Barak's Carnivorous Plant Farm in Talmei Elazar, Israel, will let several (non-venomous) snakes loose over your back - the weight and motion kneads knots and releases tension.

Getting pooped on by a bird is more than lucky at Shizuka New York Day Spa - it'll make your skin brighter too! For $180 (£118), the Geisha Facial smears bird poo (a fab exfoliator) on your face to seemingly give a pearly glow. Victoria Beckham's reported to be a fan.
