ROONEY SET TO MISS WOLVES CLASH

Striker's knee problem unlikely to be risked

ROONEY: Knee problem an issue for Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson rated the England striker as doubtful at his press conference and it's believed United's leading scorer will not be risked with the AC Milan tie in the Champions League on the horizon.

Ferguson is frustrated Rooney played for so long in England's win against Egypt, his second run-out on the terrible Wembley surface in a short space of time, and his side will probably have to battle on without their main man.

"We didn't speak to England to ensure he wouldn't play the full game but there were some changes made and I thought Rooney would have been one of them, particularly as he went into the game with a small injury," said Ferguson.

"It is disappointing.

"When you are playing on that pitch for almost an hour on Sunday and then nearly a full game on Wednesday it's far too much.

"Now he is a doubt for Wolves."

Dimitar Berbatov will be a certain starter with Michael Owen out for the season and Federico Macheda not yet fully fit.

Nani's return from suspension at least gives Ferguson the option of playing two out-and-out wingers, including the in-form Antonio Valencia, while Mame Biram Diouf is set for a place on the bench.

United can go top with a draw at Molineux but the champions realistically need all three points to take advantage of Chelsea's FA Cup commitments.

Wolves, who are fighting to avoid relegation, will again be unchanged - for a fourth successive match.

"I would prefer Rooney not to play and to be left at home in Manchester," admitted boss Mick McCarthy.

"In my opinion, he is brilliant.

"The goal that he scored recently against Arsenal epitomised him. He is world class.

"He is the complete player. I just love his attitude.

"He plays like he is playing in the school playground. He has matured and has got better and better and he is red hot at the moment."
