Fashion news: SpongeBob’s Lagerfeld makeover, Lacroix deal hits the skids and more

Karl Lagerfeld gave a SpongeBob SquarePants doll a makeover for a Paris fundraiser for the World Wildlife Fund. The figurine was outfitted in the image of his maker, with Uncle Karl’s signature dark shades and fingerless gloves.

Christian Lacroix is in dire straights again. The Ajman sheikh Hassan Bin Ali al-Naimi, who was set to buy the bankrupt fashion house, failed to close the deal in time. The court will decide how to move forward tomorrow—either accepting the current owner Falic group’s restructuring plan or extending the deadline to allow for potential billionaire buyers to pop up.

Designer Pierre Cardin was in hospital after suffering a vasovagal episode on Sunday. The 87-year-old fashion icon experienced a drop in blood pressure at the Paris airport and was admitted to a nearby hospital, but was discharged soon after. Cardin is still the proprietor of his fashion house, a rarity these days, and has said that he would only sell for $1.3 billion. [AFP, via Jezebel]

H&M will stream a live fashion show of Sonia Rykiel’s lingerie collection on their website tomorrow. Viewers can expect the Grand Palais show to be over-the-top, with models walking on moving floats centred around a 30 metre Eiffel Towel constructed of wire and twinkly lights.

Daria, Stam and Erdem go up to the Bay’s Room

The Bay opened the doors of their transformed home of high fashion, The Room, on Wednesday night for a party at their Queen Street location in Toronto. Models Daria Werbowy and Jessica Stam, designers Erdem, Jeremy Laing, Kimberley Newport-Mimran, Lida Baday (it goes on), socials Stacy Kimel and Victoria Webster all packed the massive third floor space to check out one of the most highly-anticipated retail unveiling in recent memory.

Formerly known at the St. Regis Room, the Yabu Pushelberg-designed space is a knockout. Elegant, spacious and filled with runway candy from Balmain, Aquilano.Rimondi, Proenza Schouler, Matthew Williamson, John Galliano, and, and, and. Canadian talent is here with pieces from Comrags, Jeremy Laing, Erdem, Wayne Clark and Andy Thê-Anh. In a smart move on the Bay’s part, they’ve also purchased the shoes and accessories of any of their designers who have them. Joining those are beaded boho bags by Jamin Puech, gorge orange leather boots from Michel Vivien, plus Bruno Frisoni shoes, Barbara Bui shoes and bags, Tom Binns jewels and more. It’s tough to keep your head from spinning.

While most of us won’t have access to the adjoining members-only lounge, (if you did, you’d be treated to champagne, lush couches and hair and makeup services) there’s no reason not to stop into The Room and marvel.

Fashion news: David Lynch directs Dior, Lagerfeld uses yellowface and Julia Roberts for Lancôme

dec09readsshanghai

Chanel’s Paris-Shanghai collection opened with a video–an imagined alternate history where Coco Chanel takes her first trip to China. In a potentially controversial move, Karl Lagerfeld styled his actors, including models Freja Beha Erichsen and Baptiste Giabiconi, as Chinese characters in yellowface. Lagerfeld defended his decision because of its homage to old films like The Good Earth andMadame Butterfly where European actors played Asian characters, saying, “People around the world like to dress up as different nationalities.” [WWD]

Famed fashion photographer Sam Haskins, who launched his book Fashion Etcetera at Milk Studios earlier this year, died last week at the age of 83. Haskins had suffered two strokes this year, which set him into a depression that led to his suicide.

Lancôme has announced that Julia Roberts will serve the company as a “global ambassadress.” The company isn’t saying specifically what this will entail, but all will be revealed early next year.

Marc Jacobs and Lorenzo Martone closed on a townhouse New York’s West Village for US$10.4 million. The 4,400 square feet home includes a private elevator and roof terrace among its luxurious amenities.

Filmmaker David Lynch is rumoured to be directing the next Lady Dior short for Christian Dior. Along with the Twin Peaks director, actress Marion Cotillard has been linked to the project.

The Bay makes a Blanket Statement with ten Canadian designers

Back in October, we told you about the Bay’s new line of Canadiana–The Hudson’s Bay Company Collection–the brings canoes, paddles and point blankets together with collaborations with Canadian fashion names such as Pink Tartan, Harricana and Virginia Johnson. The line launched Tuesday night at a packed cocktail party where guests noshed on de rigueur nouveau comfort food–grilled cheese sandwiches with homemade ketchup, potatoes with bison tartare and maple syrup poured over freezer-made snow. The big attraction of the evening was the official unveiling of ten one-of-a-kind coats–together dubbed The Blanket Statement–that the Bay commissioned from a group of Canadian designers who played with the iconic point blanket. (Gallery after the jump)

While we’d already seen a few of the coats (Erdem’s made it on to the cover of our November issue), we hadn’t seen the full collection up close. Favourites were Erdem’s cocoon coat, Smythe and Lida Baday’s short and sweet jackets, Klaxon Howl’s green, varsity bomber and Comrags’ full-length, button-covered bustled number. The coats are currently on display on the main floor of the Bay Queen Street in Toronto and will soon move to Vancouver for the 2010 games.
