Knee op blow for defender

BOSINGWA: Blow for Chelsea and Portugal
BOSINGWA: Blow for Chelsea and Portugal

Chelsea have confirmed the Portugal international needs further surgery on a knee problem, despite initially returning to light training.

There had been hopes he could even be fit for the second leg of the Champions League tie with Inter Milan but the operation puts an end to his season.

The classy full-back will be missed by Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti but also Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz.

Portugal are in the so-called 'Group of Death' in South Africa alongside Ivory Coast, Brazil and North Korea.

At least Chelsea can call on the services of Branislav Ivanovic at right-back with team-mate Joe Cole saying this week he felt the defender should be named the club's Player of the Year.
